Abstract
154,293. Newbery, G. M., and Evershed & Vignoles. Aug. 19, 1919. Sights and methods of sighting.-Consists of means for communicating direction in connection with the laying of guns and the like. The observing station which is shown as the basket a<1>, Fig. 1, of a kite-balloon contains two sights, one f<1> to be alined on the target, and the other f on a datum line. The sight f<1> is mounted on gimbals so as to be rotated by a spindle g on a casing b which is integral with a shaft c to which is secured a bracket e in which the sight f is mounted in gimbals f<2> The shaft c can be rotated by the hand-wheel d to aline the sight f on the datum line which may be the line joining the director tower of the ship towing the balloon to the director tower of another ship in the squadron. The rotation of the shaft g is transmitted by known means, for example a Wheatstone's bridge transmitter which produces an equal rotation of a shaft c, Fig. 4, relatively to a casing p at the receiving station. Rigidly attached to the casing p is a bracket l to which is secured the sight m which can be alined on the datum line by operating a handle k; the sight m is free to turn in altitude in its bracket. The shaft s operates a director to be controlled and may also carry a pointer t moving over a scale s on the casing. To limit the are of movement of the sight f<1> the shaft c may be provided with a plunger adapted to engage in any one of four holes arranged at intervals of 90 degrees round the bracket c, a similar arrangement being then provided for coupling the flanges z, z<1> at the receiving station.
