Abstract

Known derivatives, having an antibiotic action, of 7-amino-deacetoxycephalosporanic acid of the formula (I) <IMAGE> have been prepared by means of a novel process by reacting a sulphoxide of the penicillin of the formula (II) <IMAGE> with a silylating agent consisting of cyclic lactams of the formula (III) <IMAGE> to give a novel azetidinone intermediate of the formula (IV) <IMAGE> which cyclises to give compounds of the formula (I) under the action of hydrobromic acid and pyridine.
