Abstract

154,170. Terrisse, H., and Levy, M. Nov. 15, 1919, [Convention data]. Glucose is obtained from waste wood &c. as described in Specification 143,212, and the hydrochloric acid used is regenerated by subjecting the acid-saturated mass to distillation in one or more partially evacuated acid-proof receptacles, provided with scrapers to keep contents from stick. ing to the heating-members. Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show the types of apparatus which may be used. In the form shown in Fig. 1 a revolving drum a is mounted on a stationary hollow axis b through which hot water is circulated. The mass, introduced through feed hole k, is saturated with acid supplied by pipe e. Excess acid i; distilled off through the pipe f, scrapers g keeping the contents from sticking to the axis b. The apparatus shown in Fig. 2 comprises a mix. ing tube l, provided with a conveyer screw m and inlets o for introducing acid, from which the mass passes to a receptacle p, where it is stirred by a mixer q and in which it may be heated. On completion of the reaction the mass passes into a tuba r heated by water in the jacket v, excess acid being removed through the tube t connected to a vacuum pump. Controlling valves x, w allow the vacuum to be maintained. The mass separated from the bulk of acid is discharged into a vat y in which the extraction of glucose &c. is effected. Referring to Fig. 3 the mass already saccharified is introduced through an opening K into a cylinder A where it is distributed by means uf paddles G on to one or more hollow superposed plates B through which heating water circulates. The plates B are provided with radial slots to allow the mass to pass through. The cylinder is partially evacuated and the vapours formed are drawn off through the passage L.
