Abstract
1537563 Electric resistance heating ASEA AB 23 April 1976 [25 April 1975] 16529/76 Heading H5H High pressure, high temperature furnace comprises a pressure vessel 1 lined with thermal insulation 27 within which is a cylindrical heater 25 defining a chamber 24, the wall of the cylindrical heater being made up of ceramic elements 61 and having annular channels 68 for heating. elements 70, further thermal insulation, in layers 62a, 62b, 62c, 62d surrounding the wall and providing a measure of support and gas sealing, and flat current leads for heating elements 70 being arranged vertically on the outside of the wall of the heater beneath insulation 62. The leads lie in grooves 75 in the outer walls of ceramic elements 61. They are supported by loops 76 lying within channels 68 and are retained by "bolts" 77. The ceramic elements 61 are U-shaped and are built up in layers to provide successive heating element channels 68. End faces meet in radial planes. Lower surfaces are received, 72, for locating adjacent layers. Inward facing openings 71 admit heat to chamber 24. Layers of aluminium silicate felt 62a-62d are impregnated with zirconium oxide cement during manufacture and are held on by strips 63. Thermocouples (80, Fig. 2, not shown) lie in ceramic tubes (81) extending vertically through aligned holes (80) in the webs of the ceramic elements. At the bottom of the heater, every annular channel has a heating element; towards the top, alternate channels are empty. The elements may be energized in groups. The heater stands in pressure vessel 1 within a thermally insulating sheath made of a felted ceramic material (40, Fig. 2, not shown) and having a thermally insulating lid (28). In use a ring 12 of mechanical reinforcement mounted on a trolley 14 holds lid 4 and base 3 of the pressure vessel in place.
