1537147 Dyeing; brightening and sizing paper SANDOZ Ltd 3 March 1976 [6 March 1975 18 July 1975] 08460/76 Headings D1B DIP and D2B Dyed or optically brightened paper is obtained by forming pre-sized paper stock into a sheet which is passed into a press to remove water, the sheet is dried in a pre-size-press dryer and then further sized and dyed or optically brightened in a size press the resulting sheet being dried in a post-size-press dryer, there being added to the paper prior to the pre-size-press dryer a compound or mixture of compounds (a) of formula: in which R is C 8-22 alkyl, C 8-22 alkanoyl, C 8-22 alkenyl, C 8-22 alkenoyl, unsubstituted phenyl, phenyl substituted with I or 2 C 1-9 alkyl groups, unsubstituted naphthyl or naphthyl substituted with I or 2 C 1-9 alkyl groups, X is -O- or -NH-, with the proviso that X is -NH- only when R is alkenyl or alkkenoyl, one of the R 1 's in each unit is hydrogen and the other is hydrogen or methyl, m is an integer 5 to 130 and the block contains 5 to 80 ethyleneoxy and 0 to 50 propyleneoxy units per molecule, and/or a compound or mixture of compounds (b) of formula: in which R 2 is C 10-20 alkyl, C 10-20 alkenyl, 2-hydroxy-3 (C 10-20 alkoxy-n-propyl, 2-hydroxy-3-(C 10-20 ) alkenoxy-n-propyl, C 10-20 -alkanoyl, or C 10-20 alkenoyl, Z is 0 or an integer 1 to 5, m is an integer 2-6, which compound is unsubstituted or N-oxyalkylated with 1 to 80 alkyleneoxy units selected from ethyleneoxy and propyleneoxy units and is in free base, acid addition salt or quaternary ammonium form, and/or of formula: in which R 3 is C 9-9 alkyl or C 9-19 alkenyl and Y is 0 or an integer 1 to 4, which compound is unsubstituted or N-oxyalkylated with 1 to 80 ethyleneoxy or propyleneoxy units and is in free base, acid addition salt or quaternary ammonium salt form. The compounds as above are used in quantities of 0.01 to 1% by weight based on the dry weight of pre-sized paper, aqueous application liquors having a pH value of 4.5 to 8. Direct and basic dyes are used as are water soluble brighteners.
