Abstract
1536887 Integral cathode - diaphragm structure TOKUYAMA SODA KK 27 Aug 1976 35794/76 Heading C7B [Also in Division B5] A lattice, network or porous cathode for electrolysis has bonded to and partially embedded into one surface thereof a film of a polymer composition containing cation-exchange groups. The coated surface may be deactivated e.g. by coating with resin or paint or the other surface may be specifically activated e.g. by Ni electroplating. For alkali metal salt electrolysis a thin anion exchange or neutral layer may be incorporated in or on the cation exchange film, e.g. by introducing amino groups, crosslinking with an alcohol or reaction with a sulphone. For oxidation resistance this anionic layer may be halogenated. A neutral or oxidation resistant cationic layer may also be applied on the anode side of the film. Fabric or fibrous material may be included to give mechanical strength. In Examples are the following disclosures: (1), (3) and (11) a fluorosulphonyl resin laminated on either side of PTFE cloth, to which a further resin layer is applied on one side, this side being bonded to a steel cathode via PTFE or PVDF, and the whole being optionally treated with ethylene diamine (Ex. 3) then KOH hydrolysed and optionally (Ex. 11) impregnated with polyethylene oxide; (2), (8) and (9) a perfluorosulphonyl ether-substituted PTFE bonded to a steel cathode via copoly (TFE/ HFP) and optionally treated with diisopropylamine diethylamine, tetraethylene pentamine, piperazine or propylamine before alkali hydrolysis; (4) a mixture of SBR rubber, methylmethacrylate, styrene, divinylbenzene and stearyl methacrylate is coated on to PVA cloth, applied to a cathode, heated to polymerize and bond it and hydrolysed ; (5) a mixture of methyl vinyl ketone, styrene and divinylbenzene is polymerized, coated on a cathode and treated first with PCl 3 in dioxane, then with acetic acid; (6) a precondensate of phenol, Na mphenol sulphonate and HCHO is coated on to PVA cloth, bonded to a cathode and heated to cure and bond it; and (7) poly (p-hydroxystyrene) is treated with NaOH/paraldehyde/iminodiacetic acid to give an amphoteric polyelectrolyte which is blended with PVA and coated on to a cathode.
