Solidifying and then removing filn2s.-A machine for freezing ice-cream comprises a rotary flanged drum a filled with ice and salt or other cooling medium, the cream being spread on the surface of the drum at the top and removed when frozen by a rotating bladed roller m and discharged down the inner surface of a removable casing s. During the treatment the material is removed from the drum by the blades of the roller m, and is directed on to the surface of the drum again by a pivoted flap or guide t, Fig. 4, but when the material is completely frozen the flap t is drawn back to the position shown in full lines and discharges the material down the casing. The blades n of the roller may be plain, or serrated as shown in Fig. 5. The direction of rotation of the roller may be reversed, for discharging the cream, by a reversing-gear comprising bevel-wheels 7, 9, 11, Fig. 5, and a sliding clutch sleeve 14 on the shaft p of the roller. A series of small rollers 23, Fig. 4, carried by a flexible band 21 removably secured to the casing or to the framework serve to knead or work the material. The casing s is in two parts and may be provided with bars w, Fig. 1, slidable in grooves x in the frame of the machine. The cooling-medium is introduced through a door in the end of the drum. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the drum is fitted with an inner cylinder to provide only an annular space for the cooling medium. An adjustable inclined scraper q, Fig. 4, may be used to remove the last traces of material from the drum.
