Abstract

1536227 Polymeric semipermeable membranes UOP Inc 23 March 1976 11609/76 Headings C3R and C3L [Also in Division B1] A method of making semipermeable membranes comprises reacting a film-forming polymer with a monomer which reacts with and cross-links the polymer to form a cross-linked polymeric film having semipermeable properties and grafting on to the polymer at reactive sites a reactant which blocks such reactive sites at which oxidizing attack or fouling might otherwise occur. The grafting reaction may be before, during or after the cross-linking reaction. The polymer may be a polyethyleimine or a polyvinyl alcohol. When a polyethylenimine is used it may be cross-linked with a di- or triacyl halide, sulphonyl halide, bischloroformate or diisocyanate and the reactive sites may be blocked with an ethylenic compound, an epoxide an aldehyde or an anhydride. When a polyvinyl alcohol is used it is cross-linked with a di- or tri-acyl halide, diisocyanate or ethylenic compound which reacts with hydroxyl groups and the reactive sites (remaining hydroxyl groups) are blocked with an acid halide, isocyanate or epoxide. In examples polyethylenimines are reacted with acrylonitrile and with epichlorhydrin to block reactive sites, coated on a porous fabric-reinforced polysulphone substrate and cross-linked with isophthaloyl chloride to form supported membranes; a similarly supported membrane of polyvinyl alcohol also is obtained, cross-linked with isophthaloyl chloride and with reactive sites blocked by reaction with epichlorhydrin; the membranes are tested for salt-rejection using aqueous sodium chloride solution.
