1536135 Gauging PROTOCOL ENG Ltd 20 Feb 1976 [21 Feb 1975] 7471/75 Heading B3B [Also in Division B4] A method of locating the tip of a tool 3, e.g. a drill or a punch, accurately in relation to a desired working position on a workpiece 8, e.g. photographic film, comprises projecting on to the surface of said workpiece a shot of light that indicates the position that the tip of the tool will touch when a tool carrying spindle 5 is moved towards the workpiece. A light projecting system may comprise a lamp 12 mounted in a housing 14 connected by means 18 to a fixed tool head 1. A lens 17 directs light on to an angle mirror 19 to deflect the light concentrically with the tool axis and focus it on the workpiece 8. The mirror 19 has a hole 20 to allow the tool 3 to pass therethrough. The mirror is mounted on a foot 7 which engages the workpiece and holds it against surface 2 before the tool 3 engages it. Alternative optical arrangements (Figs. 3 and 4) avoid having a mirror with a hole 20, but have the disadvantage that the axis of the light beam is oblique to the tool axis, and any variation in thickness of the workpiece will alter slightly the position of the light spot. The lens 17 may be blanked-off by a mask 21 to reduce the amount of reflected light. A stop 6 gauges the required depth of penetration of the tool. After the tool is positioned by means of the spot of light, the workpiece is clamped in position by a clamping foot 7.
