Abstract

1535444 Lasers RAYTHEON CO 20 Dec 1976 [2 Jan 1976] 53024/76 Heading H1C The ring resonator of a rotational rate sensor has an even number of mirrors 12-22, Fig. 1, or 42-48, Fig. 4, in the optical path, the mirrors being so arranged that the electromagnetic field distribution of a circulated resonant beam is spatially rotated by #/2 radians for each complete passage of the ring. Due to this spatial rotation and the phase alterations effected by the mirrors, the resonator supports two oppositely directed resonant beams each having a circular polarization which is oppositely directed to the other and each of a different frequency. The resonator includes a laser active medium 24 in a magnetic field from an energized coil or magnet 30, the Zeeman effect so obtained producing a total of four resonant beams of different frequencies, two for each direction around the ring. The output beams from mirrors 20 or 44 may be used in a feedback path 40, 41 to effect resonator frequency stabilization. A suitable laser active medium may be a gas mixture comprising 8 <SP>3</SP>He + 0À48 <SP>22</SP>Ne + 0À52 <SP>20</SP>Ne.
