Abstract
1535171 Coupling light guides NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 Dec 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 44775/74 Heading G2J The refractive index of the cladding 6 of a waveguide 4 is increased over a limited length (e.g. at one end) so that an eranescent field is maintained on the external surface, a second waveguide being positioned and adapted to enable the field to be phase matched to propagation in the second waveguide. The second waveguide may be planar (as in Fig. 2) or circular. To ensure a proper match in phase velocity, a diffraction grating 8 may be needed as shown. The refractive index of the cladding may be raised by an ion exchange method; e.g. if the cladding is a sodium glass the end of the waveguide may be immersed in molten silver nitrate (at 250‹C the R.I. of a 10 Ám cladding increased to 1À6 in 6 hours) The core can be formed of material unaffected by the ion exchange process e.g. a liquid.
