Abstract
1534298 Riveting ROSS COURTNEY & CO Ltd 6 Aug 1976 [10 Sept 1975] 37234/75 Heading B3U [Also in Division F2] A fastener for the blind connection of hollow members 11, 12, 13 comprises a tube having a body portion 4 which is integrally connected at at least one end 5 by a frangible or deformable neck 6 to a head portion 3, the head portion 3 presenting an externally tapered end towards the body portion end 5 to facilitate driving the head portion into the end 5 to expand the. latter radially outwardly. In Fig. 1, the neck 6 is formed by incisions 7, 8 which allow the tabs so formed to be bent inwards to form the tapered part of the head, and leave frangible bridges 6. In Fig. 3, each head portion 3 has cylindrical end parts of different diameters joined by a tapered part 19, radial bridges 6 connecting the head to the body. A further form has the neck as an annular portion between the tapered end of the head portion and the inner edge of the body end 5, the neck not being sheared, but being deformed into the end 5 as the head portion is driven in. In Fig. 2, the fastener is used to join three elongate members 11, 12, 13 of hollow rectangular cross-section. The body portion 4 extends through holes in opposite walls 22, 32 of the middle member 12, and initially the members 11, 12, 13 are slightly spaced apart, with each head portion 3 projecting into one of the outer members 11 or 13 to abut the inner face of an outer wall 41 or 43. As the members are forced together, the fastener necks shear and the head portions enter and expand the ends 5 of the body portion 4 to rivet the three members together. If only two members are to be connected, the fastener may be threaded at one end, to screw into one member, the other end having a head portion 3.
