Abstract

1533916 Controlling vehicle headlamps FAUSTO CARELLO & C SpA 5 Feb 1976 [6 Feb 1975] 04598/76 Heading F4R A hydraulic system for automatically controlling the inclination of the headlamps of a motor vehicle in response to vertical displacements of the vehicle body relative to the front and rear axles comprises first and second levers 23, 24 pivotally mounted on the vehicle body 5 at 25, 26 and adapted to oscillate about a mean angular position in accordance with the vertical displacements of the body 5 relative to the respective axles 29, 34. The levers act on the respective mobile elements 62, 63 of hydromechanical transducers 64, 65 so as to vary the volumes of chambers 66, 67 connected by ducts 69, 70 to a variable volume chamber 68, the volume of chamber 68 representing the algebraic difference of the displacements measured by the two levers. The chamber 68 is the input chamber of an hydraulic transducer 22 having a mobile element 72 which imparts, by means of parallel pistons 89, 90, equal variations to the volumes of two similar output chambers 17, 20. The chambers 17, 20 are connected by respective ducts 18, 21 to the input chambers 12, 13 of actuators 10, 11 which are mechanically connected to the headlamps 1, 2 to tilt the latter by means of connecting rods 6, 8 and 7, 9. Chambers 12, 17 and duct 18 and chambers 13 20 and duct 21 constitute first and second hydraulic circuits 16, 19 which are analogous but are not interconnected. Hydraulic pressure in the system is maintained by springs 55 in the actuators 10, 11, but the rods 28, 33 connecting the levers 23, 24 to the respective axles 29, 34 may if desired be replaced by resilient shock-absorbers. The Specification describes four modified systems (Figs. 2-5, not shown, all of which comprise the first and second analogous but unconnected hydraulic circuits and all of which include variable volume chambers defined, at least in part, by one or more compressed resilient bellows.
