Abstract

1533661 Gas content determination CORNING GLASS WORKS 8 March 1976 09178/76 Heading G1B Apparatus comprises a vessel 10 for reacting a sample and a reagent so as to evolve CO 2 or O 2 , a means 48 for introducing a displacing fluid into the vessel to transfer a gas mixture of evolved CO 2 or O 2 and gas in the space above the sample/reagent in the vessel to a detector 30, said detector measuring the concentration of CO 2 or O 2 in this gas mixture, and means 50 for draining sample and reagent from the detector and vessel and flushing said detector and vessel by passing a flushing fluid through detector and vessel in a direction opposite that of the transfer of gas mixture from vessel to detector. The detector is suitably a thermal conductivity detector. The chloride ion concentration of the sample may be monitored by passing an optical beam through the vessel containing the sample and reagent and measuring the intensity of the beam at a given wavelength, Fig. 2 (not shown). The reagent may be a CO 2 releasing reagent e.g. an acid, or a CO 2 binding and O 2 releasing agent e.g. a mixture of saponin and potassium ferricyanide at pH>8. The sample is suitably whole blood or blood serum.
