1533404 Seals T P NICHOLSON 28 March 1977 [27 Dec 1975] 48866/75 Heading F2B An annular metal gasket, for pipe flanges, valve covers, etc, has radially inner and outer machined grooves EKF and GLH end is formed on one, or as shown, both end faces with a series of annular end face grooves I & J of rectangular profile in radial cross-section. The end face grooves I & J ensure that the compressive clamping load on the gasket is concentrated into less than 50% of its total seal surface area to readily enable deformation of the gasket into surface irregularities on rough machined surfaces to ensure a perfect seal. The gasket may be arranged in a groove (Fig. 2) or simply placed between the flange joint faces with a surrounding nip control ring 5. For larger joints, a gasket may be formed of a radially spaced interconnected series of such ring-like gaskets, the interconnection between each radially adjacent pair of rings forming a T-shaped profile groove in radial cross-section. The gaskets may, as stated above, be formed as a circular ring or may be shaped to suit more than one such aperture of circular, oval, triangular or rectangular form. The metal gasket may be faced, i.e. plated by electro-deposit, with silver, indium, gold and nickel. The annular grooves may be formed by machining or etching. The gaskets may be machined from solid material or fabricated from solid drawn or rolled material of the correct section and the ends either butt-welded or brazed together.
