Abstract

1532678 Stabilizing polymers BAYER AG 8 Oct 1976 [11 Oct 1975 17 Nov 1975] 41916/76 Headings C3K and C3R [Also in Division C2] A process for stabilizing synthetic polymers comprises adding thereto, or to the starting material therefor, a piperidinyl guanidine compound of the formula: or a corresponding tautomeric form thereof, in which X represents a radical: in which A represents hydrogen, a straightchain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl or alkinyl radical having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, an aralkyl radical having 7 to 12 carbon atoms of the group -CH 2 -CHR 4 -OH, where R 4 represents H, methyl or phenyl, R 1 and R 2 are the same or different and each represents a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 12 carbon atoms or R 1 and R 2 , together with the ring carbon atom to which they are attached, form a cycloalkyl ring having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, R 3 represents hydrogen, a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, an aralkyl radical having 7 to 12 carbon atoms, a #-cyanoethyl radical, a #- alkoxy carbonyl ethyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms in the alkoxy moiety, an aryl radical having 6 to 14 carbon atoms, the group -CH 2 -CHR 4 -OH, where R 4 represents H, methyl or phenyl, or the group in which A, R 1 and R 2 are as defined above, Z has the same meaning as X or represents a group -NUV, where U and V are the same or different and each represents H, a straightchain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, an aralkyl radical having 7 to 12 carbon atoms or an aryl radical having 6 to 14 carbon atoms which may in turn be substituted by an alkyl radical having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or by a C 1-4 alkoxy, hydroxy or nitro group or by a chlorine or bromine atom, and where the radical U may also represent a group R 5 -W, where R 5 represents an aryl radical having 6 or 10 ring carbon atoms optionally substituted by a chlorine, bromine, methyl or methoxy group, a straight-chain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or an aralkyl radical having 7 to 12 carbon atoms, and W represents a CO- or SO 2 -group, the radical Y represents a group of the general formula =N-R 6 , where R 6 represents H, a straightchain or branched alkyl radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical having 5 to 7 carbon atoms, an aralkyl radical having 7 to 12 carbon atoms or an aryl radical having 6 to 14 carbon atoms which may in turn be substituted by an alkyl radical having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or by a C 1-4 alkoxy, hydroxy or nitro group or by a chlorine or bromine atom, R 3 , R 6 , U and V not all being hydrogen at the same time. Examples describe the stabilization of polyurethane (Examples 16 and 17), a copolyester ether elastomer (Example 18), a copolyamide (Example 19), a segmented linear polyurethane elastomer (Example 20) and a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride (Example 21). These examples also describe the preparation of the various polymers to be stabilized.
