Abstract

1531723 Polymeric biguanides IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Oct 1975 [12 Nov 1974] 48876/74 Heading C3R The invention comprises polymeric biguanides and salts thereof in which the recurring unit has the formula in which each R independently represents a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbon radical, and wherein X represents a group (m is from 2 to 12) or the group Y, and Y represents -(CH 2 CH 2 O) n CH 2 CH 2 - (n is an integer), -(CH 2 ) 5 .O.(CH 2 ) 5 - or a polymethylene chain interrupted by one or more -NH groups, the total number of carbon atoms in X and Y together being at least 17. The polymers are prepared by reacting a bisdicyandiamide of formula with a diamine RHN-Y-NHR, or by reacting a diamine salt of dicyanimide having the formula with a diamine RHN-Y-NHR or an inorganic salt thereof, or by reacting 1 mol proportion of dicyanimide or an equivalent amount of a metal salt thereof with approximately 0À5 mol proportion of a diamine of the formula RHN-X-NHR and reacting the product so obtained with a mixture of a diamine of the formula and a monoamine of formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>NH. The polymers are fungicidal and bactericidal and may be mixed with solid diluents or dissolved or dispersed in water or non-aqueous liquids to form compositions for the control of microorganisms. Examples are given.
