Abstract
1531503 Measuring velocity and acceleration SANDERS ASSOCIATES Inc 15 Oct 1975 [29 Nov 1974] 42268/75 Heading G1K A linear acceleration transducer 16 of known type is mounted on a rigid rotor 10 such that its sensitive axis is parallel to, but not coincident with, the axis 14 about which the rotor 10 spins. Using theory developed in the specification, the output of the transducer can be used to determine the angular velocity of the rotor about two axes orthogonal to each other and to the axis 14. By mounting a motor 12 which spins the rotor 10 on a turn-table 18 rotating about an orthogonal axis Figs. 3B and 3C. A known acceleration can be generated so that the transducer 16 can be calibrated. Two further accelerometers can be located on the axis 14 with their sensitive axes parallel with each other but orthogonal to the axis 14 (this arrangement of further accelerometers is the subject of divisional Specification 1530993), the three accelerometer outputs producing measures of translational acceleration in two directions, and of angular velocity and acceleration about these directions. The invention is applicable to measuring the motion of ships, aircraft and artillery projectiles. In the latter case, five accelerometers are used.
