Abstract

1530593 Reducing hull resistance A H ORR 26 Nov 1975 [26 Nov 1974] 51089/74 Heading B7A A marine vessel has a hull with water guide plates mounted on it which guide water along non-converging (when viewed in plan) streamlines over the stern section of the hull. In a first embodiment, water guide plates 15 are mounted on each side of the hull. The plates 15 have the same contour as the hull at a position where the beam is a maximum and they extend aftwardly from this position beyond the stern of the hull. Keel plates 16 depend from the plates 15 and carry pivotable planing surfaces 18. A further hinged plate 19 provides a planing surface beneath the keel plates 16. The keel plates 16 extend forwardly beneath the bow to define an inverted channel 17 which guides relatively undisturbed water on to the surfaces of the stern section of the hull. In a second embodiment the vessel is a trimaran with the two outer hulls having water guide plates similar to those in the first embodiment. In a third embodiment (not shown) a catamaran has two asymetric hulls with water guide plates attached to their undersides. Two other embodiments are described relating to a submarine and a surface vessel each having water guide plates in their stern regions.
