Abstract
1530142 Starting high pressure discharge lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 21 Nov 1975 48003/75 Heading H2H A starter for a high pressure discharge lamp comprises a source of undamped, high frequency ionizing voltage and a transformer T2 for coupling the voltage to the lamp. The lamp may be a sodium or mercury lamp and the starter enables rapid restarting of a hot lamp. The lamp is connected to a conventional ballast circuit and the frequency of the starting pulses supplied by the high frequency source is in the range 17 kHz to 60 kHz. The high frequency source may supply sine or square waves having a half period which is less than the de-ionization time constant of the lamp so that the level of ionization increases with each half cycle.
