Abstract

1529939 Reading record cards EMI Ltd 6 Oct 1975 [16 Oct 1974] 17122/78 Divided out of 1529937 Heading G5R An object purporting to be a security document comprising a layer with a permanent structure in the form of selected spaced regions within which magnetically anisotropic material is aligned in a distinct direction and other regions wherein the material is unaligned or aligned in another distinct direction, are investigated by a process comprising the steps of reading and storing any information recorded on any such medium and, in order to assess veracity of the object, magnetizing any such layer to above its coercive force value with a unidirectional magnetic field and detecting the resultant magnetic remanence pattern. Initially a magnetic field may be applied to record a production signal of known form into the magnetic medium, any such recorded production signal being read with said information and of comparing the read-out production signal with the known form to detect any anomalies of the form as can be caused by simulation of a permanent alignment remanence pattern by variation in the thickness of the material.
