1529794 Two-electrode reference system for cathodic protection MORGAN BERKELEY & CO Ltd and J H MORGAN 2 Dec 1975 [12 Sept 1974] 39884/74 Heading G1N [Also in Division C7] A reference electrode system for use in cathodic protection of a metallic structure in contact with an electrolyte comprises a pair of reference electrodes insulated from and mounted on the structure adjacent one another and having different electrolytic potentials which are substantially stable in the electrolyte, the electrodes being connectable to a circuit which monitors their relative potential. Thus, if this changes, damage to one or both reference electrodes can be assumed; this precludes the necessity of routine visual inspection of reference electrodes, e.g. on an oil rig. The electrodes are used to monitor the potential of said structure, to discover when sacrificial anodes are consumed, or to determine the impressed current voltage required for protection. The electrodes, one of Zn and the other of Ag/AgCl may be encased in an insulating backing and mounted to a structure by an insulated metallic bar; a wire from the electrodes may pass through the wall of the structure.
