Abstract

1529593 Metal sheathed resistance heating element LES CABLES DE LYON SA 10 May 1976 [28 May 1975] 19081/76 Heading H5H A metal sheathed mineral insulated heating element 1 is connected at each end to a flexible supply cable 10 by baring the adjacent ends of the resistor 2 and cable core 11 connecting the bared end of the resistor 2 to a metal connector 7, encasing the end of the sheath 4 and the connection between resistor 2 and connector 7 with a hard plastics layer 8 (polyphenyl sulphur) to provide a fluid tight seal between the sheath and the resistor, fixing the bared and of cable core 11 to connector 7 and encasing the joint so formed in a second plastics layer 13 which exerts a stress on the first hard plastics layer 8. As shown, the sheath 4 is of copper and is provided with a protective P.V.C. sheath 5 which is stripped away at each end to enable an earth terminal 6 to be threaded and soldered to sheath 4. The connector 7 may be formed as a pin provided with blind holes to accommodate the ends of the resistor 2 and cable 10 which are secured by crimping. Brazing or soldering may be used to secure connector 7 to the resistor 2 and cable 10. The second layer 13 may be injection moulded polyphenyl sulphur or polyethylene. A machine for joining the heating element to flexible cables is disclosed. Different length elements with different length flexible cables enables various ratings of heating cable to be prepared for use in heating rooms, the heating cable being embedded in cement or concrete.
