Abstract

1529379 Centrifugal separator MITSUBISHI KAKOKI KAISHA Ltd 29 Sept 1976 40385/76 Heading B2P An automatic-sludge-discharging centrifuge for separating a liquid mixture into sludge, heavy liquid and light liquid components comprises a rotary vessel 44, 45, Fig. 1, having an inlet 19 for the mixture to be separated, nested separator plates 15, a light liquid outlet 1, a heavy liquid outlet 2, and sludge outlet, 48 controlled by a cylindrical valve 50 slidable between the open and closed positions by liquid in variable-volume pressure chambers 31 and 32 respectively. When accumulated sludge 28 builds up in the sludge chamber 18 of the vessel and eventually blocks a discharge passage 27 for the heavy liquid, the trapped heavy liquid similarly builds up in a heavy liquid sensing chamber 30 and overflows via passage means 69, 22, 21, Figs. 4 and 5 into a chamber 33 to force a piston 36 downwardly thereby opening a valve 38, 39 to allow liquid from a chamber 24 to flow through passages 66, 65, 35, 61 into chamber 31 and force the valve 50 downwardly to open the sludge outlets 48. The liquid in chambers 31 and 33 is slowly bled off through vent nozzles (57), Fig. 3 (not shown) and 59, Fig. 5, respectively whereby liquid in a chamber 23 flows through a passage 62 into chamber 32 to raise the valve 50 and close the sludge outlets 48 and flows through a passage 64 into a chamber 34 to raise the piston 36 and close the valve 38, 39. Alternatively, a spring may be used to raise the piston 36. The centrifuge may be used to separate water and sludge from fuel oil, animal oil or vegetable oil.
