Abstract
1528912 Applying plastics coatings to carpets FIRTH FURNISHINGS Ltd 26 Nov 1975 [31 Aug 1974] 38141/74 Heading B2E A sound-insulating flooring material for use in motor vehicles is made by applying a filled thermoplastics powder to the back of a length of carpet, heating to melt the powder and form a flexible intermediate layer, passing the coated carpet through a cooled nip, applying a heat-foamable plastics powder to the intermediate layer and heating to foam the powder and form a resilient backing layer of lower density than the intermediate layer, and preferably of greater thickness. The carpet may be woven, tufted, non-woven, needled or knitted, the intermediate layer may be of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and the backing layer may be of polyethylene. The process may be performed continuously by passing the carpet at 4m/min under powder applicators, and heating the first coating at 152‹C by infra-red, and the second coating at 154‹C by infra-red to form a crust and then in an oven at 220‹C for foaming. The respective layer thicknesses may be 1.5-2mm and 3-6mm. The product may be subsequently cut to shape and formed, with re-heating if necessary.
