Abstract

1528251 Light guide communication system PILKINGTON P E Ltd 21 Jan 1977 [13 Feb 1976] 05677/76 Heading G2J An elongate light guide is provided with means for injecting light thereinto for transmission therealong, and means for receiving light therefrom, one of either the injection or receiving means being movable and being constrained to move adjacent an elongated peripheral wall portion of the guide, the arrangement being such that light can pass through the elongate wall portion so as to maintain the injector and receiver in contact via the guide during such movement. As shown in Fig. 1, a light guide 2 follows a circular path and is supplied with light from source 1. Detectors 4 are secured to rotor 5 and closely follow the surface of guide 2 during rotation. The guide is so made that some light exits through the wall to be detected at 4. In one form Fig. 2 (not shown) scattering centres are included in the guide material to scatter light through the wall. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a narrow slot 11 is provided in cladding 10. A transparent roller may roll along slit 11, an axial conical convex surface directing the light to a detector axially disposed on the roller. Alternatively a globule of non wetting light transmitting liquid may be used as the moving contact. In another form an optical fibre has a longitudinal slot in which a portion of the moving contact slides. In a further embodiment the light guide is an internally silvered tube with a longitudinal slot in which the sliding contact moves. As shown in Fig. 10 (not shown) two light guides are placed mutually parallel and an injector located at the end of one arch a detector located at the end of the other. The device may use an elongate electroluminescent source adjacent the elongate wall portion. Rectilinear as well as rotary motion may be used.
