Abstract

1527988 Container handling device MODULAR DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS Ltd 17 May 1976 [27 May 1975 7 Nov 1975 12 Feb 1976] 23098/75 46181/75 and 05589/76 Heading B8Q A container handling device comprises a rigid frame 10, 11, having extendable legs 18 in housings 16 pivoted thereto by hinge plates 17 and twist locks 14, 15 for engaging the corner fittings of I.S.O. and similar containers. The frame has sockets 12, 13 engageable by the prongs of a fork-lift machine. The legs 18 have feet 19 and are extended by rams 20 pivoted at 21 to the housing 16 and at rightangles thereto at 22 to the leg to prevent side loads on the ram 20. An hydraulic power pack 25 and electrical control gear 26 for the rams 20 are mounted on a lower cross-member 11. In use the frame engaged by the forks of a lift machine is positioned at the end of a container and the legs after being swung outwards are extended to position the twist locks 14, 15 for engagement with the corner fittings so that the container can be lifted on or off a vehicle. Preferably the upper twist locks are provided on rearward extensions of the upper member 11 so as to be able to engage the corner fittings by downward movements. Modifications are described to provide adjustment of the spacing of the twist locks by mounting the lower locks on sleeves slidable on the legs which may be mounted directly in the vertical side members of the frame. Additionally intermediate twist locks may be provided to engage half containers. Steady members may allow the frame to be free standing when the legs are fully contracted.
