Abstract

1525610 Silicon nitride DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 30 Dec 1976 [30 Dec 1975] 53217/75 Heading C1A Reaction-bonded silicon nitride material is subjected to impregnation to introduce iron oxide therein. Suitably, the material is exposed to an iron-containing compound to deposit the compound in the silicon nitride material, followed by heating to decompose the deposited compound and form the iron oxide. Alternatively exposure to the iron-containing compound may be carried out at a sufficiently elevated temperature to ensure deposition of iron in the reaction-bonded silicon nitride in the form of iron oxide. Impregnation may be effected by placing the silicon nitride in a solution of the compound, suitably a solution of an iron salt in its own water of crystallization, or by vacuum impregnation using a solution of an ironcontaining compound. Colloidal iron compounds e.g. colloidal hydrated or hydroxylated oxides, organic compounds of iron, e.g. the acetate, oxalate or oleate, may be used, readily decomposable oxygen-containing iron salts being preferred, especially ferric nitrate hexahydrate or nonahydrate. The treated silicon nitride may be dried at about 150‹ C and the iron oxide formed by heating to 850‹ C.
