Abstract
1525601 Headlamp tilting systems LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 6 Jan 1976 [31 Jan 1975] 4215/75 Heading F4R In a hydro-mechanical system for controlling the inclination of the headlamps of a motor vehicle in a vertical plane in accordance with the attitude of the vehicle body, a movement modifier 11 has a fluid medium 19 which locks an output member 21 relative to an input member 14 when the latter is subjected to a sudden movement by a sensor 10 connected with an unsuspended vehicle body part, e.g. when the vehicle accelerates. This movement is carried through a transmission arrangement 12 to tilt the headlamps H. Such sudden movement overrides an equilibrium established between biasing springs 17, 42 in the movement modifier 11 and the transmission system. The fluid medium 9 is a grease applied between the output member 21 and a sleeve 16 connected via a housing 13 to the input member 14 which allows slow restoration of an equilibrium between the springs 17, 42. Thus, if the load on the vehicle increases, sensor 10 moves to the right and the initial upward tilting of the headlamps H is reduced as the grease 19 allows the input member 21 to move to re-establish equilibrium between the springs 17, 42. Headlamp flutter caused by wheel bounce is prevented by a damper unit 36.
