Abstract

1525436 Conversion of coal to oil COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 27 July 1977 [13 Aug 1976] 33765/76 Heading C5E Coal is digested in a heavy oil and after separation of the insoluble residue the coal solution is heated to evaporate at least a portion of the heavy oil, which is recycled to the digestion, leaving a concentrated solution which is subjected to catalytic hydrogenation (e.g. at 420-480‹ C and 2000-5000 p.s.i.g. using a fixed bed of cobalt molybdate catalyst); the hydrogenation products are separated into a liquid product, which is fractionated into a light hydrocarbon oil (e.g. boiling between 150 and 250‹ C) and a heavy oil which is passed to the digestion step, and gaseous hydrocarbons which are subjected to steam reforming and a CO shift reaction to form hydrogen which is used for the catalytic hydrogenation. The process can be started up using anthracene oil as the heavy oil digestant.
