Abstract
1525229 Fluid-blast circuit interrupter REYROLLE PARSONS Ltd 30 Sept 1975 [1 Oct 1974 31 Jan 1975] 42654/74 and 4317/75 Heading H1N A fluid-blast circuit interrupter comprises a pair of tubular contact members 10 and 11 one of which 10 carries a sliding contact 18 to bridge the gap between them and also act as a valve to allow a blast of pressurized fluid into the gap when it is moved out of contact with the member 11. Arcing contacts 14, 16 are provided within the tubular members at least one of these 16 being arranged to move and draw an arc after the sliding contact 18 has opened so that a blast of pressurized fluid, e.g. SF6, will be directed on to the arc and will subsequently remove the arcing products, e.g. through the interior of the hollow members and out through filters. The arcing contacts are preferably provided with arc-resistant tips and the fixed tubular members have insulating arc resistant nozzles the internal bores of which diverge downstream of the blast to improve electric field strength. The gas blast may be provided by a buffer-type piston coupled to sliding contact 18, or by various forms of separate pressurizing arrangements. The sliding contact is preferably an insulating tube containing contact fingers 19 of conductive material. The insulating nozzles 12, 13 may contain venting holes. The opening and closing of the contacts may be effected by a linkage including a lost-motion connection so that the sliding contact 18 will open before the opening of the arcing contacts commences. (Fig. 1A, not shown). Several units, arranged in series in a fluid filled housing may be coupled to a common actuator and the operating rod for each unit may also carry a valve to allow pressurized fluid to enter at the appropriate movement (Fig. 1, not shown). It is stated that this fluid could be a liquid, e.g. oil. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) the ends of the tubular fixed contact members are formed with outer cylindrical sleeves having projecting finger portions to take the arcing, which occurs when the sliding contact is withdrawn, and so avoid damaging valve sealing rings provided in channels on the inner surface of the sliding contact. In this embodiment the insulating nozzles are lengthened and are of PTFE to improve dielectric characteristics without lengthening the gap opening.
