Abstract

1525224 Stretched olefine polymer cellular films BAKELITE XYLONITE Ltd 14 Aug 1975 [14 Aug 1974 30 Sept 1974] 35781/74 and 42460/74 Heading C3C [Also in Division B5] A stretched cellular olefine polymer film is made by extruding a mixture of an at least partly crystalline linear olefine polymer and a blowing agent to produce a cellular extrudate which is then stretched to a stretch ratio of at least 1À1 to 1 in at least one of the machine and transverse directions, the extrusion temperature and blowing agent being so chosen that when the extrudate is stretched the film obtained has a uniform cellular structure, not more than 14% by vol. of closed cells (as defined), an apparent density (as defined) which is 90-20% that of the non-cellular unstretched polymer, a cell factor (as defined) equal to or less than + 0À65 (which may be zero or negative), 0-25% by wt. of a filler and/or pigment a thickness up to 11 mils (as defined) and an average cell volume (as defined) not greater than 10<SP>-4</SP> cc. In the examples mixtures of crystalline linear high density polyethylenes, liquid paraffin, azodicarbonamide, a partially saponified ester of montanic acid, hydrogenated tallow, p-toluene sulphonyl semicarbazide, calcium stearate and/ or silica were extruded to form tubular extrudates which were air cooled, collapsed and stretched by take-off rollers to give the above cellular films.
