Abstract

1525132 Nestable containers MARS Ltd 30 July 1976 [1 Aug 1975 17 March 1976] 32345/75 and 10799/76 Heading A4A A nestable drinking cup 11 made of polypropylene is provided with four diamond shaped projections 22 on the inside of a portion 21 of the side wall 13, and a series of diamond shaped projections 23 on the outside of a portion 19 of side wall 13, whereby in use when two identical cups 11, 11' are nested together, the sloping lower surfaces of each projection 22 on the inside cup 11 engage the sloping upper surfaces 29 of two adjacent projections 23 on the outside of cup 11', thus holding the cups together. Projections 23 are resilient to allow the cups 11 and 11' to be joined together and separated. The upper two rows of projections 23 are for decoration and to provide insulation when the cup is gripped. A shoulder 16 is provided on the inside of the cup 11 to cooperate with the bottom of a second cup 11' to provide a space for storing dry drink ingredients, the positioning of projections 22 and 23 being such to resiliently engage the bottom of cup 11' on to shoulder 16 to provide a seal. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the inner projections are round and the pairs of shoulders on the outside of the cup are each formed by an arcuate portion subtending an angle of greater than 180 degrees. The bottom portion of each cup is outwardly flared so that when two cups are stacked together, a sealed space is provided for storing drink ingredients. In a further embodiment, Figs. 5-8 (not shown), the outer projections are diamond shaped and extend around only a portion of the circumference, the inner projections have a discshaped upper portion and a lower portion with downwardly tapering sides and a downwardly tapering ridge, which shaping aids removal of the cup from the mole mould during manufacture. The projections defining the shoulders may be provided on the inside of a cup and the projections for engagement between a pair of shoulders provided on the outside of a cup.
