Abstract

1525104 Controlling light AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 22 Aug 1975 [3 Sept 1974] 35033/75 Heading G2F In a variable absorption light transmitting or reflecting device comprising a counter-electrode 6, and a transparent electrode 2, 3 on which is disposed a layer 4 of persistent electrochromic material (material exhibiting a change in optical absorption in response to an electric field, such charge being reversed only when the material is subjected to a reverse polarity field or a short circuiting condition), a layer 5 of porous insulating material is provided between and in contact with layer 4 and the counter-electrode 6, and is wetted by a liquid electrolyte contained in a space 7 defined by seals 9, a glass plate 8 and the layers 2-6. As particularly described, the layer 5 may be of silica, alumina or glass, and the electrolyte is H 2 SO 4 . The layer 4 may be any of a number of transition metal compounds, but particularly WO 3 . Counter-electrode 6 may be a transparent Pd layer or it may be opaque. For a layer 4 of WO 3 , counter-electrode 6 is preferably of WO 3 and graphite.
