Abstract
1525048 Data processing systems I CATT 5 April 1977 [12 April 1976] 14908/76 Heading G4A A data processing system comprises a serial store formed of segments 15 between nodes 16, a fast data line 13 having access to each node, a plurality of by-pass lines 30 selectively bypassing respective portions of the store, each of which portions comprises one or more segments, switching means 33, 34 at the nodes controllable by commands to connect-in selected by-pass lines and link the correspondingly by-passed store portions into closed loops via respective feed-back lines 31, and a plurality of data processing units 36 each operable to perform a data processing operation involving information passing along the respective by-pass line and around the closed loop associated therewith. The commands may be sent on the fast data line 13 or on a slow data line 12 which comprises the linked segments 15; each segment 15 may comprise a shift register and may store one or more words of information, each word including address, data and instruction fields. The slow data line 12 may be divided into major loops, each comprising a plurality of the portions; each major loop may be set up with data and instructions and used to execute autonomously a sub-routine. A plurality of the major loops may be used for the parallel execution of sub-routines. In a preferred form, a major loop comprises four non-recirculating segments (A) followed by four recirculating segments (B) followed by four non-recirculating segments (A) and so on, the A data interacting with the B data in the data processing units 36 as it by-passes the recirculating B data as the data string passes along the major loop. Every four segments the recirculating/non-recirculating character of the A and B segments is interchanged, so that the B data then interacts with the A data as it by-passes the recirculating A data. This allows relatively complex data processing operations to be performed with simple data processing units 36, e.g. serial adders. The invention may be applied to data compression wherein common letter patterns in a stored text are searched for and replaced by single characters outside the normal alphabet. It may also be applied to process stored information derived from radar samples for collision avoidance purposes.
