Abstract
1525000 Testing optical fibres STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 4 Dec 1975 49816/75 Headings G1A and G1N To determine the position of a break in a sheathed optical fibre, optical radiation is passed along the fibre to cause a temperature rise at the break and the sheath is monitored along its length to locate the resulting temperature gradient. The monitoring may be effected by a thermal imaging camera, e.g. a pyro-electric vidicon camera, or by passing the fibre through a ring of infrared detectors; alternatively the fibre may be passed through a small, continuously replenished bath provided with a thermocouple.
