Abstract

1524817 Seaming non-metallic sheet material KERRY ULTRASONICS Ltd 15 Aug 1975 [10 Sept 1974] 39358/74 Heading B5K Thermoplastics components 1 are ultrasonically welded together along a predetermined weld line 3 defined by an interface by applying a compressive force in a first direction to hold the components together, and applying ultrasonic energy at a localized site on the line 3 in a second direction transverse to the first direction, the weld line 3 at the site extending in a third direction in a plane transverse to that defined by the first and second directions, the components 1 and the means 2 whereby the energy is introduced into the same being moved relative to one another to cause the localized site to traverse along the entire length of the line 3. As shown, the components 1 are two parts of a circular section bobbin and ultrasonic energy is applied by a vibrating horn 2. The components 1 are held together along the line 3 by an adjust able horizontal compressive force applied by a pneumatic cylinder 12 and indicated on a gauge 13. The components 1 are supported on a mandrel rotated through gears 4, 5 from a motor 8. The weld may be completed in a single rotation or several rotations of the components 1. In a modification, the components are of elliptical cross-section and the horn is pressed against the joint by resilient means which allow in and out radial movement during the rotation of the components. In another modification, circular cross-section components are joined in an oblique plane.
