Abstract

1523617 Coating compositions AMERICAN CYANAMID CO 31 Oct 1975 45467/75 Headings C3M and C3R Stable water-dispersable compositions comprise (A) 15 to 85 weight per cent based on (A + B) of a non-ionic polyether polyol resin containing only carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and optionally halogen atoms, having an average molecular weight of 300 to 4000, at least two alcoholic hydroxy groups, 20-100 weight per cent of hydropholic moieties derived from aromatic or cycloaliphatic materials and 0-80 weight per cent of hydrophilic moieties consisting of -CH2CH2O- units; (B) 85 to 15 weight per cent of a water-dispersible, non-gelled, anionic vinyl ploymer having a molecular weight of 5000 to 100,000 and having pendant carboxyl groups in amount between 0À40 to 4À00 gram mol per 1000 grams of polymer; and (c) 10 to 50 weight per cent based on (A + B) of a compatible aminoplast cross-linking agent having an average molecular weight not greater than 1500. Component B may be provided by polymerizing the corresponding monomers in the presence of the polyether polyol and optionally a diluent, whereby grafted products may be formed. The polyether polyol may be a reaction product of alkylene oxides with optionally hydrogenated bisphenols or phenol/formaldehyde resins. The compositions may be dispersed in water and used for coating, e.g. phosphated steel panels, or may be used for laminating and moulding. Examples describe compositions comprising butyl acrylate/styrene/ acrylic acid/hydroxyethyl acrylate copolymers 'and butyl acrylate/styrene/acrylic acid copolymers prepared by polymerization in the presence of polyethers derived from 4,4<1>-isopropylidenes bisphenol and ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, or mixtures of butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate/acrylic acid copolymers with polyethers derived from 4,41-isopropylidene bisphenol and propylene oxide or propylene and ethylene oxides; methylated melamine/formaldehyde or dimethoxymethyl diethoxymethyl benzoguanamine and optionally titanium dioxide and curing catalysts.
