Abstract

152,353. Scheuer, A., and Scheuer, H. Oct. 7, 1918, [Convention date]. Fluid-pressure; force transmitting mechanism. -Relates to the automatic regulation of the braking pressure for a railway vehicle in accordance with the load. To minimize the disturbance of such regulation by the rocking of the vehicle the variation in the deflexion of the supporting springs is transmitted to the brake adjusting mechanism through a spring coacting with a hindrance. In one arrangement, Figs. 1 and 2, a link 2 connects the spring shackle 1 to a crank 3 on a shaft 4 mounted in the underframe and carrying an arm 7 to operate the rod 9 leading to the brake adjusting member, and actuation of the rod 9 by jolts or oscillations of the bearing spring is minimized by a spring 5, normally unstressed, connecting the crank 3 to the shaft 4, and by the inertia of a mass 8 on the shaft. In a modification, the spring 5 is normally stressed to press abutments against the upper and lower edges of the crank 3 and of an arm fixed on the shaft 4. In place of the mass 8 the hindrance may be constituted by a fluid brake acting on the arm 7. In another arrangement, Figs. 7 and 8, the deflexions of two bearing-springs are utilized to actuate the rod 9, the spring which is less deflected constituting the hindrance. The movements of each spring are transmitted through a link 2 and arms 15, 17, fixed on a transverse shaft 16, to rods 18 operating bars 19, 20 rocking on a transverse shaft 21. On this shaft are also rotatably mounted the arm 7 for operating the rod 9 and a driver arm 22, a second driver arm 23 being fixed on the shaft. The spring 5, normally stressed, connects the arm 22 to a collar 24 on the shaft. Each arm 22, 23 has a lateral extension, and these extensions overlap the adjacent bar 19 or 20 and the arm 7 at opposite sides as shown. The arrangement is such that the arm 7 is operated only by simultaneous deflexions of the two supporting-springs in the same direction. In a further modification, two, three, or four supporting springs disposed on opposite sides of the vehicle are similarly interconnected.
