Electric index type-wheel machines.-The typewheel is set by means of a pointer p movable over an index-plate f, and is depressed for impression by means of an electro-magnet c in circuit with the pointer and index-plate. The pointer is preferably in the form of a pencil or penholder provided with a contact tip. The index-plate may consist of a metal plate bearing index characters and provided with contacts k<1>, Fig. 3, for engaging the pointer, and with a terminal f<0>. The indexplate is covered by a transparent plate f<1> formed with holes f<2> arranged over the contacts k<1>, the sides of the holes being rounded to facilitate movement of the pointer. The plate f<1> and an insulating-plate f<3> are detachably secured by a frame f<4>. The index-plate is of small size and is preferably placed rear to the printing-point. The core d of the electro-magnet e may operate a lever a connected by a link b to the type-wheel. A variable resistance may be provided for adjusting the impression, and a condenser for preventing sparking may be arranged in the circuit. Letterspacing, back-spacing, and shift-keys for operation by the left hand may be provided. The letterspacing key may be dispensed with by providing the type-wheel with a blank space which is set by moving the pointer to a special index-character on the index-plate. A key for manually operating the impression lever a may be provided. Electric index type-lever machines.- The abovedescribed arrangements may be applied to typelever machines by providing the index-plate with insulated contacts each in circuit with an electromagnet for operating a type-lever. A dummy type-lever for use in letter-spacing may be provided.
