Abstract

1521882 Porous thermoplastic polymer filaments and films RADUNER & CO AG 2 Sept 1975 [11 Sept 1974 (2) 8 Nov 1974] 25399/74 39663/74 and 48449/74 Heading C3C Porous filaments or films having at least microscopically visible pores are made from thermoplastic polymers by (a) incorporating a pore forming agent (as defined) in the polymer, (b) extruding or melt spinning the polymer to form a filament, or film, (c) subjecting the extruded or melt spun polymer to a heat treatment (as defined) at a temperature of at least 100‹ C. above the glass transition temperature of the polymer thereby to form the pores, allowing longitudinal shrinkage of the polymer during the heat treatment by at least 10% and (e) cooling the polymer. In the examples filaments, fibres or yarns of nylon 6 or 66, polyethylene terephthalate or polypropylene were immersed in aq. triethanolamine, water, aq. polyethylene glycol, acetone, a humid atmosphere, or an aq. solution of ammonium chloride and sodium nitrate and then heat treated by contact with heated fluidized bed of sound, polyethylene glycol, paraffin oil, air or an aluminium surface and then cooled with air: the treated filaments, yarns and fibres were optionally dyed.
