1521681 Washing and sanitary units J MITCHELL 4 Aug 1975 [13 June 1974] 26190/74 Headings A4H and A4N [Also in Division E1] A washing and sanitary unit for use by a disabled or enfeebled person, comprises a walled enclosure having an opening at part of its periphery to allow ready access to a central space, said space being served by a shower head 10 and having at least two postural support surfaces, such as 1, 2, of which one includes a toilet 1a, for use as a postural support surface whilst showering, with the postural support surfaces being located in at least two different vertical levels relative to a floor 4 which includes drainage means for removing waste water falling thereon. A wash basin is located at 5 and a tip-up padded support 12 is provided which, in the position shown, acts as a backrest for a person using the toilet or, when disposed in its lower horizontal position, forms a support surface above surface 1 for a person using the wash basin. The basin 5 is adjustable both vertically and horizontally and may be folded back when not in use. The surfaces and floor of the unit and the surrounding walls may be integrally moulded of plastics. A mirror may be folded down to convert the basin to a table surface. In a modification, the surfaces are adjustably mounted to existing walls by brackets. Some or all of the surfaces may be folded against the walls or removed from the unit. A further surface may be disposed between the levels of surfaces 1 and 2, the vertical spacing between each surface being preferably 8 inches. The surfaces may be in the general form of a helix in a modification, different portions of the helix constituting the surfaces in the different levels. Other modifications in the relative dispositions of the surfaces are disclosed.
