Abstract

1521084 X-ray absorption analysis SIEMENS AG 12 Aug 1975 [9 Dec 1974] 33623/75 Heading G1A [ Also in Division H4] In evaluation circuitry for an x-ray apparatus, an upstream signal I 0 from an amplifier 11 and a downstream signal I from an amplifier 8 are processed to give -y = log I 0 /I, from which a correction factor C is generated according to: C = 1 + - y( - y - - y 1 )(A 0 + A 1- y) for O#y#-y 1 , or 1 + (-y - -y 1 )(B 0 + B 1- y + B 2- y<SP>2</SP>) for -y 1 #-y#10, where, for an x-ray beam characterized by a normalizing spectral line at 51 KeV, the constants would have these values: - y 1 = 4À45; A 0 = -0À035; A 1 = 0À0039; B 0 =-0À04; B 1 = -0À0126; B 2 = 0À00075. The ratio I/I 0 is then multiplied by C to give a corrected measure of the object density. An x-ray tube 1 having e.g. an anode voltage of 100KV, produces a polychromatic beam 4 of x-rays for transversely scanning a layer of an object 5, the beam 4 being rotatable, between scans, about an axis perpendicularly intersecting the scanning plane at a point 7 in the middle of the scan. The ratio of upstream to downstream intensities detected by respective detectors 10, 3, should ideally be an exponential function of the mass of material in the beam path; but for polychromatic radiation, differential absorbence characteristics of the test object 5 give rise to errors by reason of spectral hardening of the beam in its passage through the object, for which the correction factor C must be applied. The product CI, formed in a multiplier 15, is divided by I 0 at 9 and further processed by known methods to give a layer-image TV display at 12. Alternatively, Fig. 3 (not shown) a log quotient stage (16) produces -y = log I 0 /I and a function forming stage (18) produces a transformed log correction C<SP>1</SP> for adding to -y in a stage (17).
