Abstract

1520780 Cooling underground cables HYDRO-QUEBEC 2 Dec 1975 49444/75 Heading H2C At least one chamber 18 containing a volatile liquid encloses underground cables for cooling purposes. The liquid is volatized by heat from the cable and passes to a heat exchanger 26 where it is condensed and runs back into the cable enclosure. The cables 10 are positioned in an oil-filled steel pipe 12, the pipe 12 having a layer of porous material, e.g. untreated glass fibre whereby the volatile liquid is distributed over the surface of the pipe. Each chamber 18 may be inclined and the heat exchanger connected at the highest end. The heat exchanger may be incorporated in a lamp standard, Figs. 3 to 7 not shown. The volatile liquid may be ammonia, propane, fluorocarbon refrigerant or water.
