Abstract

1520291 Moulding fibre slurry MITSUI PETROCHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 July 1975 [3 July 1974 18 July 1974 22 July 1974] 28097/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] A composition for making into a slurry to mould gas permeable articles such as flower pots and garden furniture comprises by weight (1) 5-50% particles of SG< 1, (2) 20-80% thermoplastics fibres of length 0À5-50 mm. and diameter 5-200 Ám., and (3) 10-75% fibres which are infusible or have a melting point above that of the thermoplastics fibres, and which are inorganic fibres optionally including organic fibres up to 10% of the total composition. A male or female mould is dipped into the slurry and a layer of the composition is accreted on it by suction. The layer is compressed with another matching porous mould, steam is passed through to dry the article, and finally the article is heated to fuse the thermoplastics fibres and bond the composition. The particles (1) may be hollow or porous and have a particle size of 30-2000 Ám., e.g. exfoliated vermiculate, perlite, expanded glass, hollow carbon bodies, or expanded thermoplastics or thermoset resins. The thermoplastics fibres (2) may be polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, PVA, EVA, polyester or polyamide and be treated with a waterdispersing agent. The inorganic fibres (3) may be glass, metal, silica, asbestos, sock wool or slag fibres with cellulosic fibres included.
