Abstract

1519953 Measuring displacement and velocity electrically NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 June 1975 [26 June 1974] 28376/74 Heading GIN [Also in Divisions G3 and H2] A linear induction actuator incorporates a capacitive position transducer for indicating the position of a movable conductor relative to a fixed winding and fixed magnetic member. In the arrangement shown, an aluminium tube 26 is mounted on a shaft 28 between a fixed iron tube 21 and a set of coils 22 mounted on a fixed stainless steel tube 24, and energization of the coils 22 causes the tube 26 and shaft 28 to move axially to adjust a valve-member (not illustrated). For sensing the position of the tube 26, electrical contact is made with the tube 24 and with two independent sections 32, 33 of the tube 21 so that a pair of capacitors C 1 , C2 are effectively formed by the tube 24 and the respective sections 32, 33, the capacities of C 1 and C 2 varying with the axial position of the tube 26. A bridge circuit in a servosystem, Fig. 6, is used to compare C 1 and C2, and the output from a detection system 44, 43, 49, 62 provides a signal representing the position of the tube 26. A signal representing the velocity of the tube 26 is taken from a resistor 59, as described in Specification 1519954 (Division G1). The position and velocity signals are used to provide retro-active control of the actuator (Division G3).
