1519862 Metathesis catalysts for polymerization of narbornenes SHOWA DENKO KK 9 Sept 1975 37118/75 Heading C3P A process for the ring opening polymerization of narbornene derivatives containing at least one nitrile, ester, ether or imide group, a chlorine or bromine atom, an acid anhydride group or an amide group, or containing a hydrocarbon residue having at most 20 C atoms and containing one of the above-mentioned groups uses a catalyst system prepared from an organometallic compound of a metal of Group IA, IIA, IIB, IIIB, IVA or IVB of the long term Periodic Table and the reaction product of at least one of tungsten or molybdenum oxide and at least one of phosphorus pentachloride, pentafluoride, pentabromide, oxytrichloride or trichloride, aluminium trichloride, tribromide or triiodide, boron trifluoride or trichloride, titanium tetrachloride, tin tetrachloride, vanadium oxytrichloride, or tetrachloride or silicon tetrachloride. The preferred organometallic compounds are the aluminium siloxane of formula where R<1>, R<2>, and R<3> are halogen atoms, alkyl (up to 10 C) groups, alkoxy (up to 10 C) groups, R<4> is an alkyl (up to 10 C) group, and R<5> is an alkyl or alkoxy (up to 10 C) group or a substituent of formula where R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are as above and n is less than 10, or a dialamoxane of formula where R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are halogen or alkyl or alkoxy (up to 10 C) and R<4> is an alkyl (up to 10 C) group.
