Abstract

1519800 Densitometers UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 8 Dec 1976 [19 Dec 1975] 52213/75 Heading G1A A densitometer (e.g. for a radiation film dosimeter) comprises means 4, 1 Fig. 1 for locating infrared sources 10 and sensors 9 in register to measure the optical density of separate areas of a film; and means Fig. 2 for indicating the output of each sensor 9. The sources 10 (LEDs radiating at 930 nm) and sensors 9 (phototransistors), each having a collimation lens, are adjustably mounted in aluminium tubes 33 in respective hinged blocks 4, 1 of good thermal conductivity, the lower block 1 having a recess 6 for holding a film and for engaging a complementary raised portion 8 of the upper block 4. A second hinged upper block 3, engaging a recess 5 in the lower block 1, carries sources 14, 15 and sensors 12, 13 for temperature compensation and for setting a zero-density level derived from the transmittance of a reference film processed with a batch of test films. In a measuring circuit Fig. 2, the output of a power unit 18 supplying all sources is controlled to stabilize the output of the temperaturecompensating sensor 13. Each pair comprising a source 10 and sensor 9 is switched in sequence by a selector arrangement 19-21, the selected sensor output being compared with that of the zerodensity reference sensor 12, logarithmically amplified at 22, digitized, and printed-out at 30.
