Abstract

1519595 Topping root crops REED & UPTON Ltd 30 Oct 1975 [16 Dec 1974] 54329/74 Heading A1F A tractor-towed carrot topping machine comprises a main frame, rotatable cutters 28 for scything foliage at soil level and roller means located in front of the cutters and adapted to push the root crop into the soil so that the tops of all the roots are at the same height, relative to the ground, thereby allowing the cutters to remove the foliage from the root crop. The main frame, formed of side struts 10 connected to end struts 12, 14, is supported on a sub-frame of two bogie-type structures which carry the roller means. As shown, the roller means comprise an endless belt 50 stretched around a large diameter roller 48 and a small diameter roller 46 whose axles are supported in bearings 44, 42, respectively, fixed to the side struts 40 of the frame of the bogies. The bogies are connected to the main frame by pivoted screwed height adjusters 68 and by swinging arms 58 pivotally attached to the rear axle 56 of each bogie and to a bracket 60 secured to the main frame side struts 10. The height of the large roller 48, relative to the main frame, can be adjusted by means of a screwed rod 62, passing through a bracket 64 on the strut 10, rotatably secured in a pivoted block 66 carried in a bracket 68 attached to the swinging arm 58. A pair of ground engaging wheels 78 are carried on an auxilliary frame comprising a pair of rigidly connected struts 70, 72 pivotally connected on each side of the rear axle 56 of the rear bogie. The roller means are rotated by a chain drive driven from the wheels 78. The machine is connected to the three point linkage of the tractor by a parallelogram type linkage. A double acting hydraulic ram is connected across the parallelogram linkage such that expansion or retraction of the ram causes the endless belt 50 to engage the ground more, or less, firmly, respectively. The cutters 28, comprising discs having deflectors and cutting knives, are rotated about a vertical axis, the drive being taken from the P.T.O. shaft of the tractor via a coupling 32, universal joint 34, drive shaft 36 and gear box 24. The cutters 28 have radial deflector plates 30.
