Abstract
1519456 Amplifiers POST OFFICE 18 Sept 1975 [7 Oct 1974] 43362/74 Heading H3T A wideband amplifier using feed-forward to improve linearity, comprises first and second input paths in parallel, the first path having an amplifier 5, 6, and the second path having a passive impedance 13 in series with a delay line 14, an attenuator 10 coupling an output from the first path to produce at the output of the second path 16 an error signal proportional to the non-linearity of the amplifier 5, 6, an error amplifier 17, 18 connected to receive the error signal, and another output 21 from the first path including a passive impedance 22 and a delay line 23, being coupled with the output of the error amplifier to produce an output corrected for non-linearity. The delay line 14 compensates for the delay of 5, 6 and 10 etc so that the delays from input 1 to 16 along each path are equal, the capacitor 13 being added in order to obtain a better match with the phase/frequency characteristic (A), Fig. 2 (not shown), of the amplifier 5, 6. Similar considerations apply to the delay line 23 and the capacitor 22 in relation to the amplifier 17,18. The attenuator 10 compensates for the gain of 5, 6 so that the resultant attenuations along each path from input 1 to 16 are equal, the power hybrid 12 producing an output equal to the difference between the inputs at 11 and 15. The power combiner 20 subtracts the amplified error input at 19 from the uncorrected input at 24. It is not essential for the input signal at 1 to be divided into outputs of equal power at 3 and 4 provided that the attenuation of 10 and the gain of 17, 18 are correctly chosen.
